Linguistically, Los Cabos means “the capes.” However, for many people, Los Cabos means a good time in the beautiful weather of tropical Mexico. The cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo – and the tourist corridor between them – make up Los Cabos, found at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Los Cabos is a popular stop for cruise ships and a popular vacation destination for travelers seeking a fun, sunny destination.

However, just because Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are both considered to be Los Cabos, they aren’t necessarily close to each other. In fact, they’re separated by about 20 miles, and are two cities with very different personalities. Before you decide where to stay, decide what you want to do while in Los Cabos, and plan to stay closest to your center of activity. For example, if you plan to go on a fishing trip, you’ll probably find Cabo San Lucas to be the best choice, as it’s closest the marina.

However, determining where to stay isn’t going to be easy. When looking at listings online, most hotels will simply give the address of Los Cabos. To get a better idea of where hotels are located, check the number of miles they are located from the Los Cabos International Airport. San Jose del Cabo is about seven miles away, while between eight and 25 miles away from the airport, you find the tourist corridor. At 25 to 28 miles from the airport, you’re in Cabo San Lucas.

If you’re vacationing in Los Cabos, you have a number of options for places to stay. The most obvious is probably hotels, which can range from luxury hotels and resorts to more economical hotels. Bed and breakfast inns can also be found, as can all inclusive resorts, where you won’t pay extra for food or drinks on the property. Whatever your budget, you should be able to find something in Los Cabos to meet your needs.

If you plan to swim, you should find out if the beach near your hotel is safe for swimming. If it’s not, you’ll be stuck swimming in the hotel pool. If ocean swimming is an important part of your experience, you may want to choose another alternative.

For the most demanding visitors, there are the Rosewood Hotels and Las Ventanas al Paraiso, both of which are internationally known for their spas. You can visit these spas even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, but you should plan to make a reservation ahead of time. Another fine spa is located at Pueblo Bonita Rose. Luxury on a smaller scale is available at Casa Natalia, a smaller European-style boutique hotel located in San Jose del Cabo.

Another option is one of the full-service hotels, such as the Hilton or Crowne Plaza, both of which are capable of hosting large conferences. In addition, the Grand Baja Resort and Spa is an all-inclusive resort, as is the Royal Solaris and the Melia Cabo Real.

For a homier atmosphere, consider the Bungalows Breakfast Inn, Casa Pablito, the Mar de Cortez, Los Milagros, La Casa Contenta B&B, or – for wee bit of Ireland – The Blarney Castle Inn.

However, before you make reservations at any hotel, be sure to check the hotel’s ratings by looking for online reviews. These can help you determine whether you’ll find a particular hotel to your liking. If you’re booking your trip through a travel agent, find out if they have had clients who stayed at that particular hotel before and whether or not they’d recommend it to you.
