Reasons To Visit Mexico City
If you’ve never been to Mexico, then a great place to start your expedition is in Mexico City! Mexico’s capital is a mix of modern and ancient Mexico. If museums are the kind of attractions you’re looking for then Mexico City is the place! The Plaza de la Constitucion or Zocalo is in Mexico City’s historic center. It’s also the second largest public square, Moscow’s Red Square being the first. They hold huge festivals and protests here. It was built in 1519 on top of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. It’s actually a very famous meeting spot between the Aztec Emperor and Hernan Cortes, the famous Spaniard. In 1880 a huge pedestal was set up in the center but today the only thing that stands in the middle is the Mexican Flag.
The Fine Arts palace is another site worth visiting in the capital. The president Porfirio Diaz ordered its construction in the early 1900’s. The revolution erupted in 1910 postponing the construction. It was finished being constructed in 1934. The exterior is made in marble influenced by Italian architecture. The theater has a Tiffany glass stage curtain which portrays a beautiful view of the valley of Mexico with its 2 volcanoes. It also features famous murals by Jose Clemente Orozco, Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siquieros and Diego Rivera. They also have gifts shops and restaurants in the palace.
The Almeda Park is another famous site to visit. Its right by the Palace of Fine arts and dates back to the 16th century. You can walk by a famous monument known as the Herniciclo a Juarez built in 1905. It’s surrounded by semi circles of white columns designed by Guillermo Heredia. The statue of Juarez holds a book symbolizing the constitution of 1857.Once you did a little bit of walking and worked up an appetite then you can head over to Hosteria Santo Domingo Restaurant. It is a very popular restaurant amongst the tourists and locals alike. They play live music and serve great Mexican food.
They serve foods like Mexico’s infamous Cebiche, Rotisserie chicken, specially prepared fish and delicious coffees. Try their Grilled Filet with Mexican Avocado salad. The salad is refreshing and an amazing compliment to the tender filet. The restaurant’s décor doesn’t let you forget that you’re in Mexico. It has a very homey feel and has beautiful Mexican architecture. It’s a beautiful way to end a perfect day in Mexico City.
